Palm Jumeirah hotels sit in two places a driver cares about: the trunk, reached straight off Palm Jumeirah Road, and the crescent, reached through the undersea tunnel at the end of the trunk. From Dubai International, allow 30 to 60 minutes to either. The Palm Monorail runs from the Gateway station at the entrance of the island to Atlantis, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., but it’s no use with suitcases.

We drive hotel transfers in Dubai every day and the Palm is one of the places where “which hotel?” really matters, because a trunk hotel and a crescent hotel can be 10 minutes or more apart at busy times despite looking close on a map. This guide explains the layout, gives drive times, and settles the monorail versus car question. Our Palm Jumeirah limo service page covers hourly hire on the island.

How the Palm’s roads work

Think of the island in three parts:

  • The trunk. The central spine, with Palm Jumeirah Road running its length. Hotels, apartment towers, Palm Jumeirah Mall and The Palm Tower (home to The St. Regis Dubai, The Palm and The View at The Palm) are all here.
  • The fronds. The 17 fronds branch off the trunk and are mostly private villas. You reach each one from the trunk road.
  • The crescent. The breakwater that wraps around the island, with a string of resort hotels. You reach it by road through the undersea tunnel at the end of the trunk. The tunnel comes up near Atlantis The Palm, at the crescent’s apex, and roads run east and west from there.

That tunnel is the whole story for crescent hotels. Cars to and from the crescent use it, so if it’s slow, every crescent arrival is slow.

Where the main hotels sit:

Moving between two crescent hotels doesn’t need the tunnel. Moving between the crescent and the trunk, or leaving the island from the crescent, does.

Drive times to Palm Jumeirah hotels

Road distances on the fastest route, measured in our route checks. “Trunk” means the Palm Jumeirah Mall area; “crescent” means Atlantis The Palm. The ranges run from a clear road to a normal weekday rush hour.

FromTo the trunkTo the crescent (Atlantis)Typical drive
DXB Terminal 1 or 3about 32 to 33 kmabout 36 to 37 km30 to 60 min
DXB Terminal 2about 36 kmabout 40 km35 to 65 min
Al Maktoum International (DWC)about 37 kmabout 41 km40 to 60 min
Downtown Dubaiabout 22 kmabout 26 km20 to 40 min
DIFCabout 24 kmabout 28 km20 to 40 min
Dubai Marinaabout 11 kmabout 15 km15 to 30 min
Burj Al Arab / Madinat Jumeirahabout 7 to 8 kmabout 12 km10 to 25 min

From Palm Jumeirah Mall on the trunk to Atlantis is about 4 km, but budget 10 minutes or more because of the tunnel approach and the roundabouts at each end.

Palm Monorail vs car

The Palm Monorail is the only public transport on the island, according to its operator. It runs 5.5 km along the trunk with four stops: Palm Gateway at the entrance to the island (linked to the Dubai Tram), Al Ittihad Park (for Golden Mile Galleria and Palm West Beach), Palm Jumeirah Mall (for The Palm Tower and The View), and Atlantis Aquaventure.

Trains leave every 15 minutes, every day. The first train leaves Gateway at 9 a.m. and the last at 9.45 p.m.; from Atlantis, the first is at 9.15 a.m. and the last at 10 p.m. The operator lists single tickets from AED 5 and returns from AED 10, bought online or at station desks. (Atlantis’s own FAQ quotes AED 10 and AED 15, so check at the station.)

Our position: use the monorail for sightseeing, never for an airport arrival. From Atlantis Aquaventure station to a West Crescent hotel you’d still need a car, and Palm Gateway sits at the entrance to the island, a long way from most hotels with your bags in tow.

When the Palm gets slow

The Palm is fast when it’s quiet and slow when it isn’t, because traffic funnels onto one trunk road and one tunnel, both fed from Sheikh Zayed Road. Plan extra time for:

  • Weekday rush hours on Sheikh Zayed Road; Salik’s peak toll windows (6 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m., Monday to Saturday) are a fair guide.
  • Weekend afternoons and evenings, when beach clubs, restaurants and Aquaventure pull in day visitors.
  • Big nights, New Year’s Eve above all; see our New Year’s Eve transport guide.

For departures from a crescent hotel, add the buffer at the start of the trip. Once you’re in the tunnel queue, you’re committed.

Arriving at a Palm hotel: what to tell us

  1. The exact hotel name. “Atlantis” is two resorts, and a few brands have both a hotel and branded residences on the island.
  2. The tower or building, if you’re in a residence or an apartment rather than a hotel.
  3. Passengers and bags, including prams, golf bags and child seats. Four people with checked bags need a luxury SUV, not a sedan.
  4. Your flight number. We track it and time the pickup to the actual landing.
  5. Any plans before check-in. If you land early, we can drop your bags at the hotel and keep the car by the hour (minimum 3 hours) for breakfast or a drive around the city.

For guests staying at Atlantis, our Atlantis The Palm airport transfer guide covers the hotel’s own transfers, luggage storage and check-in times.

What a Palm transfer costs

Taxi fares from DXB follow the airport tariff: AED 20 to start and AED 2.62 per km, plus Salik. That’s roughly AED 105 to 110 to the trunk and AED 115 to 120 to Atlantis. Atlantis The Palm’s own estimate for the taxi from Dubai International is approximately AED 120.

Hotel transfers vary: some hotels include them with suites, others charge a fixed fee. Our private transfers are a fixed price by car class, including parking, Salik and VAT, with no surge pricing. The rate table on our hotel transportation page has the numbers.

If you’re choosing where to stay partly on how easy the arrival is, the trunk is quicker to reach and leave; the crescent is quieter and more resort-like once you’re there. Our guide to Dubai hotels worth a special arrival weighs the rest of the city too.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to the Palm Jumeirah crescent?

By road, through the undersea tunnel at the end of the Palm’s trunk. You drive down Palm Jumeirah Road from Sheikh Zayed Road, enter the tunnel, and come up near Atlantis The Palm at the crescent’s apex. Roads then run east and west to the other crescent hotels. The Palm Monorail reaches Atlantis too, but no other crescent hotel.

Is the Palm Monorail worth it with luggage?

No. The monorail goes station to station between Palm Gateway and Atlantis Aquaventure, runs roughly 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and doesn’t reach most hotels on the crescent. With suitcases you’d still need a taxi at one end. It’s a good sightseeing ride, but for arrivals and departures a car is simpler.

How long does it take from Dubai airport to Palm Jumeirah?

From DXB, about 30 to 60 minutes: roughly 32 km to the trunk and 37 km to Atlantis on the crescent. From Al Maktoum International (DWC), it’s a similar 40 to 60 minutes. Rush hours on Sheikh Zayed Road and weekend evenings on the Palm push you to the top of those ranges.

How much is a taxi from Dubai Airport to Palm Jumeirah?

Roughly AED 105 to 110 to the trunk and AED 115 to 120 to Atlantis on the crescent, based on the airport taxi tariff of AED 20 plus AED 2.62 per km. Salik tolls and slow-traffic time are added. Atlantis The Palm’s own FAQ puts the fare from Dubai International at approximately AED 120.

Which hotels are on the Palm Jumeirah crescent?

Atlantis The Palm sits at the apex, with Atlantis The Royal a short drive along. On the West Crescent you’ll find One&Only The Palm, Raffles The Palm and Jumeirah Zabeel Saray; on the East Crescent, Anantara The Palm and Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah. All of them are reached through the tunnel.
