On New Year’s Eve, Downtown Dubai closes to traffic in stages from about 4pm, and no car can reach Burj Khalifa after the closures start. For the 2025/26 celebrations, the metro ran non-stop for 43 hours. The best plan with a chauffeur is to be dropped in Downtown before the closures, then meet the car outside the closed area after midnight.

The official plan for NYE 2026/27 hadn’t been announced when we wrote this (late September 2026). Everything below comes from last year’s official arrangements, the most recent available, and we’ll update this guide when RTA and Dubai Police publish the new plan. We book event limousine and hourly chauffeur hire for New Year’s Eve every year, and NYE is the one night when timing matters more than the car.

What happened on New Year’s Eve 2025/26: the official plan

The Dubai Event Security Committee published the plan on 26 December 2025 through the Government of Dubai Media Office. The key transport points:

Item2025/26 arrangement
Road closuresBegan at 4pm and expanded gradually until 11pm
Roads closedAl Asayel Street, Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Burj Khalifa Street, Lower and Upper Financial Centre Roads, Al Mustaqbal Street, Al Sukook Street and Sheikh Zayed Road
Dubai MetroRed and Green Lines ran continuously from 5am on 31 December 2025 to 11:59pm on 1 January 2026 (43 hours)
Dubai Tram6am on 31 December 2025 to 1am on 2 January 2026
ParkingAbout 20,000 spaces in the Burj Khalifa area, about 8,000 at metro stations, plus support parking at Al Wasl Club and Al Kifaf
Vehicles on the roadMore than 14,000 taxis, over 18,000 limousines and luxury vehicles, more than 1,300 buses
Fireworks40 locations across Dubai, 48 shows in total

Emaar’s official NYE event guide for Downtown Dubai added detail. Its FAQ said authorities typically close Lower Financial Centre Road around 3pm and that other road closures could start as early as 4pm, depending on crowds. It also said public parking in Downtown was first come, first served, and that no vehicles would be allowed in after the road closures started.

Can a car drop you at Burj Khalifa on New Year’s Eve?

Only before the closures start. Once roads close in the afternoon, private cars, taxis and limousines can’t reach the Boulevard, the hotels around Burj Khalifa or the Dubai Mall entrances. Emaar’s guide was clear that restaurant and hotel badges don’t grant priority vehicle access after the closures.

That leaves three realistic ways into Downtown on the night:

  1. Arrive early by car. Be dropped at your hotel, restaurant or car park before the closures. For a dinner booking, that often means arriving hours before the meal.
  2. Arrive by metro. Last year the Red Line ran all night. Emaar’s FAQ warned that the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station could close depending on crowd conditions, so a neighbouring station and a walk may be needed.
  3. Use a badge-holder shuttle. Emaar ran shuttle buses for badge holders from Al Wasl Club and from Al Meydan (Falcon Heritage and Sports Centre), starting at 4pm with the last run into Downtown at 11pm. Return buses from Downtown started at 12:30am.

Getting out after midnight

Leaving is slower than arriving. The whole crowd moves at once, roads reopen in stages, and car parks release traffic on the authorities’ instructions. Emaar’s FAQ said Dubai Mall parking would open for exit between 1am and 2am, depending on the authorities’ directives.

Our advice for the walk out:

  • Don’t plan a pickup inside the closed area. Your chauffeur can’t get there until the roads reopen.
  • Walk out of the closure zone first. We agree a meeting point with you in the afternoon, outside the closed roads on that year’s map, and the car is there before midnight.
  • Expect a long walk. Wear shoes you can walk in and carry water.
  • Keep your phone charged. Networks are busy around midnight. Share your live location with your chauffeur before the fireworks start.

The best NYE plan with a chauffeur

We plan New Year’s Eve as a timed hourly booking rather than a single drop. Here’s the plan we recommend for Downtown.

Time (based on 2025/26)What happensYour car
Early afternoonHotel or restaurant check-in in DowntownDrops you at the door before closures
From 3pm to 4pmFirst closures around Financial Centre Road and DowntownLeaves the area with the traffic still moving
EveningYou’re inside the celebration zoneWaits outside the closure zone at the agreed point
MidnightFireworksStays put; no point moving into gridlock
12:15am onwardsYou walk to the meeting pointCar is in position; home as soon as you arrive

Why hourly hire? Because the car’s job on NYE is to wait in the right place. Hourly chauffeur hire has a 3-hour minimum, and we don’t add surge pricing or night surcharges on New Year’s Eve, or any other night.

Watching somewhere other than Burj Khalifa

Downtown isn’t the only choice. Last year’s official list of fireworks sites included Global Village, Bab Al Shams Desert Resort, Atlantis The Royal, Al Marmoom Oasis, Expo City Dubai, Dubai Frame, Emirates Golf Club, Dubai Parks and Resorts and Hatta, among 40 locations. Many of them are easier to reach by car than Downtown, and easier to leave afterwards. If you want a chauffeur to stay with you all evening and get you home soon after midnight, a venue outside Downtown is the simpler night.

Traffic windows to avoid on 31 December

  • From midday into Downtown. The earlier you’re in, the smoother it is. After 3pm, approaches around Financial Centre Road start closing.
  • 4pm to 11pm on Sheikh Zayed Road near Downtown. Closures expand through the evening; last year Sheikh Zayed Road was on the closure list.
  • Midnight to about 2am around Downtown. Walking crowds, car parks emptying and roads reopening in stages.
  • Early 1 January. Airport runs after midnight are fine if you leave from outside the closure zone. Tell us your flight and we’ll plan the route.

Our Downtown Dubai chauffeur service covers the area year-round, and our Dubai Opera parking and drop-off guide explains how the Downtown car parks work on normal nights. For the rest of the season, see the Dubai events calendar.

Frequently asked questions

For NYE 2025/26, closures around the event areas began at 4pm and expanded gradually until 11pm, covering roads including Al Asayel Street, Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Burj Khalifa Street, the Financial Centre Roads, Al Sukook Street and Sheikh Zayed Road. Emaar said Lower Financial Centre Road typically closes around 3pm.

Is the Dubai Metro open all night on New Year’s Eve?

It was last year. For NYE 2025/26, the Red and Green Lines ran continuously for 43 hours, from 5am on 31 December to 11:59pm on 1 January, and the tram ran from 6am on 31 December to 1am on 2 January. The Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station may close when crowds build.

Can a taxi or limousine drop me at Burj Khalifa on New Year’s Eve?

Only before the road closures start in the afternoon. After that, no vehicles are allowed into the closed area, and hotel or restaurant badges don’t give vehicle access. Arrive early by car, use the metro, or meet your chauffeur outside the closure zone after midnight.

Where else can I watch New Year’s fireworks in Dubai?

The 2025/26 celebrations had fireworks at 40 locations. Official sites included Global Village, Atlantis The Royal, Expo City Dubai, Dubai Frame, Al Marmoom Oasis, Bab Al Shams, Emirates Golf Club, Dubai Parks and Resorts and Hatta, as well as Burj Khalifa.

Have the NYE 2026/27 road closures been announced?

Not yet. As of late September 2026, RTA and Dubai Police hadn’t published the plan for 31 December 2026. Last year’s official plan came out on 26 December 2025, so expect the new one in the final days of December.
