Christmas Day 2026 is Friday 25 December, and in the UAE it’s a normal working day, not a public holiday. Even so, it’s one of the busiest weeks of our year: school holidays, the Dubai Shopping Festival, festive markets, packed churches in Oud Metha and New Year’s Eve a week later. Book Christmas Eve and Christmas Day cars early, and use an event limousine or hourly chauffeur for the nights out.
Christmas in Dubai: 2026, 2027 and 2028 at a glance
| Year | 25 December | Working day? | What’s happening around it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Friday | Yes, a normal Friday | School winter break (14 December–1 January); Dubai Shopping Festival (4 December–17 January) |
| 2027 | Saturday | Falls on the weekend | 2027–28 school calendar and festival dates not announced yet |
| 2028 | Monday | Yes | Not announced yet |
The school dates come from the Ministry of Education’s 2026–27 calendar, and the festival dates from Visit Dubai’s Dubai Shopping Festival page. Together they explain the week: residents with children are off, visitors are in town for the winter sun, and the malls stay busy late every night.
Is Christmas a public holiday in Dubai?
No. Christmas isn’t on the UAE government’s official public holidays list, so offices, banks and schools that aren’t already on break follow their normal hours. The roads run to a normal weekday pattern, with extra traffic around churches, hotels and malls.
For a visitor, that’s mostly good news: the metro, taxis and airport run as usual. The catch is that a Christmas lunch on 25 December 2026 overlaps a normal Friday, and the after-work traffic starts in the afternoon.
Dubai’s Christmas markets: what ran in 2025
None of the 2026 markets had announced dates when we wrote this (mid-October). Last year’s line-up is the best guide to where the crowds will be:
| Market | 2025 dates | Location | Getting there and away |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madinat Jumeirah Christmas market | About 5–31 December 2025, free entry, open until late | Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim | Car parks fill on weekend evenings; drop at the souk entrance and agree a pickup time |
| Winter District | 13–28 December 2025, free entry, from 2pm | Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Sheikh Zayed Road, beside the Museum of the Future | Emirates Towers metro station (Red Line) is next door; cars drop at the hotel side |
Both dates come from news listings published at the time. Hotels and malls across the city add their own Christmas trees, Santa visits and markets each year, and most are announced from November.
Madinat Jumeirah is the one where transport planning matters most. It’s a large resort complex on the Jumeirah coast, and on December weekends the drop-off lanes and car parks fill with diners, hotel guests and market visitors at the same time. Our Jumeirah chauffeur service covers the area, and the trick is simple: get dropped at the souk entrance, then meet the car at the same spot at a fixed time.
Christmas Eve and Christmas morning in Oud Metha
St Mary’s Catholic Church in Oud Metha, a parish since 1967 according to St Mary’s Catholic Church Dubai, is the busiest place in the city on Christmas Eve night and Christmas morning. The National reported an estimated 200,000 worshippers there on Christmas morning in 2025, with people arriving from 5:30am and screens set up outside some churches for the overflow.
Other churches stand nearby in Oud Metha, and parking around them is hard to find at any Mass time, never mind Christmas. Our advice:
- Don’t plan to park. Get dropped off and agree a pickup point on a main road a short walk away, outside the queue of cars.
- Use the metro if you’re travelling light. Oud Metha station on the Green Line is a short walk from the church.
- Arrive well before the service. The pavements fill as early as the car parks.
- For a midnight service, book the return when you book the drop-off. Taxis around Oud Metha after a late Mass are scarce, and the car can wait for you.
Jebel Ali Village has a second cluster of churches, at least six of them according to The National, sharing a worship complex with the Hindu temple and the Sikh gurudwara. The same rules apply there: drop off, don’t circle for parking, and agree the pickup point first.
Christmas to New Year: the busiest week of the year
The last week of December stacks everything at once:
| Date (2026) | What’s happening | What it means on the road |
|---|---|---|
| 14 December onwards | School winter break | Airport traffic up; mornings lighter |
| 24 December evening | Christmas Eve dinners and services | Hotels, Jumeirah and Oud Metha busy from early evening |
| 25 December | Christmas Day, a working Friday | Church traffic in the morning, brunches from midday, normal evening rush |
| 26–30 December | Shopping festival and holiday outings | Malls, beaches and Global Village busy every evening |
| 31 December | New Year’s Eve | Downtown closures from the afternoon |
New Year’s Eve needs its own plan. Our New Year’s Eve transport guide covers last year’s road closures, metro hours and where cars can meet you after midnight. If you’re booking both nights, book them together; premium cars go early for that week.
Visitors flying in for Christmas should allow extra time at DXB, which has some of its busiest days of the year over the winter break. An airport transfer with flight tracking and 45–60 minutes of free waiting takes the stress out of a delayed landing.
Which car for Christmas plans?
| Plan | Car we’d send |
|---|---|
| Christmas Eve dinner for two | Mercedes S-Class or a business sedan |
| Family to church and lunch, up to six people | Large SUV such as a GMC Yukon or Cadillac Escalade |
| Visiting family with luggage from the airport | SUV or Mercedes V-Class |
| Office or friends’ party group | V-Class, or a minibus we arrange with a driver |
Book hourly hire for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day plans with more than one stop. It has a 3-hour minimum, the chauffeur waits at each stop, and we don’t add holiday surcharges, on Christmas or any other night. The rest of the season’s dates are in our Dubai events calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Is Christmas a public holiday in the UAE?
No. Christmas Day isn’t on the UAE’s official public holidays list, so it’s a normal working day for government offices and most companies. In 2026, 25 December falls on a Friday. Schools are usually already on winter break, which runs from 14 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 under the Ministry of Education calendar.
Where can I go for Christmas in Dubai?
Hotel Christmas brunches and dinners, festive markets and church services are the main options. In 2025 the biggest markets were at Madinat Jumeirah and the Winter District at Jumeirah Emirates Towers, both free to enter. Christmas Mass at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Oud Metha draws very large crowds.
Are there Christmas markets in Dubai in 2026?
Almost certainly, but none had published 2026 dates by mid-October. In 2025 the Madinat Jumeirah Christmas market ran through December until the 31st, and Winter District at Jumeirah Emirates Towers ran from 13 to 28 December. Expect dates to be announced from November.
Is Christmas Day a working day in Dubai?
Yes. The UAE’s weekend is Saturday and Sunday, and Christmas isn’t an official holiday, so 25 December 2026, a Friday, is a working day. Expect morning traffic around churches, busy hotels from midday and the normal Friday rush in the afternoon.
