Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, and Dubai’s official Festival of Lights runs from 2 to 12 November 2026. The crowds gather in two places: Souk Al Seef and old Bur Dubai on the Creek, and the Hindu temple in Jebel Ali Village. Parking is the hard part at both, so plan a drop-off and a timed pickup. For evenings out, book an event limousine or hourly chauffeur.

Diwali isn’t a public holiday in the UAE, so the working week carries on around it. That’s what makes the evenings tricky: festival crowds meet normal rush-hour traffic.

The 2026 programme dates come from Visit Dubai’s Festival of Lights page, which promises cultural events, fireworks and shopping offers. The detailed schedule hadn’t been published when we wrote this, in mid-October. Diwali follows the Hindu lunar calendar, which is why it moves between mid-October and mid-November.

Last year gives a sense of timing. Diwali fell on 20 October 2025, and news reports listed official fireworks at Al Seef on 17 October and at Global Village on 18 and 19 October, all at 9pm. So the big shows tend to land on the weekend before Diwali itself.

The UAE’s official public holidays list doesn’t include Diwali, so offices, roads and the airport run on their normal schedules.

Souk Al Seef and Bur Dubai: the Creek-side celebrations

Souk Al Seef, on the Bur Dubai bank of Dubai Creek next to the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, is the centre of Diwali in the old town. Souk Al Seef’s events page listed a Diwali programme of live entertainment in 2025, and for 2026 the organisers of Noor: Festival of Lights have announced a Diwali celebration at Souk Al Seef on 7 and 8 November.

A few streets back, the shops of Meena Bazaar in Bur Dubai sell sweets, lamps and festive clothes, and they’re at their busiest in the evenings of Diwali week.

Here’s the transport reality of the old town on a festival night:

IssueWhat happensWhat we do
ParkingPublic car parks and street spaces in Bur Dubai fill earlyDrop at the souk entrance; the car waits outside the busy streets
Narrow streetsOne stopped car blocks a lane for everyonePickups at an agreed point on a main road, not in the lanes
Fireworks exitsEveryone leaves together after a 9pm showLeave 15 minutes before the end, or stay for dinner and leave an hour later
Shopping bags and sweet boxesHeavy, and hard to carry to a far-off taxi rankThe car comes to you; bags go straight into the boot

The Green Line runs through Bur Dubai, so the metro is a fair option if you’re travelling light. With elderly relatives or armfuls of shopping, a car that drops you at the door is easier.

Diwali at the Hindu temple in Jebel Ali

The Hindu temple in Jebel Ali Village is the main place of worship for Dubai’s Hindu community on Diwali. When it opened in October 2022, The National reported:

  • It shares a boundary wall with the Sikh gurudwara, and at least six Christian churches stand in the same area, so the whole complex shares the access roads.
  • It was open daily from 6:30am to 8:30pm, with an evening aarti at 7:30pm.
  • Parking spaces in the temple basement are limited.
  • Visitors were advised to take the metro to Energy or Ibn Battuta station and then bus F44 or a taxi.
  • More than 100,000 worshippers were expected during big festivals such as Diwali.

Opening hours and booking arrangements may have changed since, so check them in Diwali week. What hasn’t changed is the geometry: one complex, several places of worship, limited parking and residential streets around it. On Diwali that means queues of cars on the approach from Sheikh Zayed Road and drivers circling for a space that doesn’t exist.

Our plan for the temple:

  1. Go early or late. The first hours after opening and the last hour before closing are the calmest. Diwali 2026 falls on a Sunday, a weekend day, so expect families to arrive from early morning.
  2. Don’t try to park. The chauffeur drops you at the complex and waits outside the residential streets until you call.
  3. Agree the pickup point in advance. Phone signal is fine, but finding one car among hundreds isn’t.
  4. Allow longer for the evening return. If you’re heading to dinner in the Marina or Downtown afterwards, leave more time than the map suggests.

Diwali week traffic and other events

Diwali week 2026 is crowded. Dubai Design Week runs at d3 from 3 to 8 November, Automechanika takes Dubai Exhibition Centre at Expo City from 10 to 12 November, and the DP World Tour Championship starts at Jumeirah Golf Estates on 12 November. Our Dubai Design Week transport guide covers d3, and the Dubai events calendar has the full season.

Global Village’s season usually opens in October, and its India pavilion and Friday and Saturday fireworks pull crowds through the festival period. If that’s on your list, read our guide to getting to Global Village before you go.

The heaviest evenings for us are the weekend before Diwali, when the big fireworks shows usually run, and Diwali night itself, when families drive between homes, temples and restaurants.

Which car for Diwali visits?

Diwali is a family festival: visits to relatives, the temple in the morning, a dinner at night, and boxes of sweets everywhere. That shapes the car choice.

GroupCar we’d sendWhy
CoupleBusiness sedan or Mercedes S-ClassDinner and fireworks, easy drop-offs
Family of up to sixLarge SUV such as a GMC Yukon or Cadillac EscaladeRoom for people and gift boxes
Extended family with grandparentsMercedes V-Class or a van with driverSliding doors, easy steps, one car instead of three
Community or office groupMinibus or coach, which we arrange with a driverOne pickup point, one drop-off

For a day of visits, book hourly hire: a 3-hour minimum, the car waits at every stop, and the price includes the chauffeur, fuel and Salik tolls with no festival surcharge.

Frequently asked questions

Is Diwali celebrated in Dubai?

Yes, widely. Dubai runs an official Festival of Lights programme, from 2 to 12 November in 2026, with cultural events, fireworks and shopping offers. Souk Al Seef and Bur Dubai host the main Creek-side celebrations, Global Village joins in, and the Hindu temple in Jebel Ali Village draws large crowds of worshippers.

Is Diwali a holiday in the UAE?

No. Diwali isn’t on the UAE’s official public holiday list, so government offices and private companies follow their normal working week. Roads, the metro and the airport run their usual schedules, with extra festival crowds in the evenings around Bur Dubai, Global Village and Jebel Ali.

Which is the real date of Diwali in 2026?

Diwali 2026, the main day of Lakshmi Puja, is Sunday 8 November. Dubai’s citywide Festival of Lights programme runs around it, from 2 to 12 November 2026. In 2027 Diwali falls on Friday 29 October, and in 2028 on Tuesday 17 October.

How do I get to the Jebel Ali Hindu Temple?

By car or taxi to Jebel Ali Village, or by metro and bus. When the temple opened, visitors were advised to take the Red Line to Energy or Ibn Battuta station, then bus F44 or a taxi. Basement parking is limited, so on Diwali a drop-off and pickup is easier than parking.

What are the timings of the Hindu Temple in Jebel Ali?

When it opened in 2022, the temple was open daily from 6:30am to 8:30pm, with an evening aarti at 7:30pm. Timings can change on festival days such as Diwali, so check the latest hours before you go, and arrive early to beat the crowds.
