Limo vs taxi vs ride-hailing in Dubai: what each trip really costs
Limo vs taxi vs ride-hailing in Dubai: 2026 taxi tariffs, cost per real trip, airport pickups, waiting charges and when a chauffeur is worth it.

A Dubai taxi is the cheapest way to make a short solo trip: AED 5 to start on the street, AED 2.45 per km, AED 12 minimum. A pre-booked limo with chauffeur costs more per trip but wins for airport arrivals with luggage, groups, days of meetings and nights out, because the price is fixed, the car waits and one van replaces two or three taxis. Ride-hailing sits in between, with fares that move with demand. Our chauffeur service in Dubai is the limo option in this comparison.
Here are the real tariffs, then the cost of five everyday trips done each way.
Dubai taxi fares in 2026
These are Dubai Taxi’s published tariffs, read in September 2026.

| Crossing into Sharjah | AED 20 extra | AED 20 extra | AED 20 extra |
App bookings are at their peak fare from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and from 4 p.m. to midnight at weekends. The full tables are on Dubai Taxi’s tariff page and its airport taxi page.
Dubai Taxi also runs a metered limousine: AED 25 to start and AED 3.90 per km, with a charge of AED 1 a minute whenever the car crawls below 20 km/h for more than a minute. In Dubai rush hour, that last line adds up.
What’s the difference between a taxi and a limousine in Dubai?
A taxi can be hailed on the street or taken from a rank, and charges by the meter. A limousine is booked in advance and is a higher-class car. Metered limousines charge a higher per-km rate than taxis; chauffeur companies like ours charge a fixed price per trip, hour or day instead of a meter. With us, that price includes the chauffeur, fuel, Salik, airport parking and VAT, and doesn’t change if the traffic does.
Cost per real trip: taxi vs limo
We’ve worked these out from the published taxi tariff. Distances are round examples, not specific routes. Chauffeur prices are market ranges from published Dubai rate cards (September 2026); ours are on the pricing page.
| Trip | Taxi | Chauffeur | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short solo hop, 5 km, off-peak | 5 + 5 × 2.45 = about AED 17 | Not worth booking a chauffeur for this | Taxi |
| Airport arrival, one person, 25 km | 20 + 25 × 2.62 = about AED 86, plus Salik | S-Class transfer AED 400–500 | Taxi on price; chauffeur if you want to be met |
| Family of four, five big cases, 40 km from the airport | Van taxi: 25 + 40 × 2.62 = about AED 130, plus Salik, if a van is at the rank | SUV or V-Class transfer, fixed price | Chauffeur: guaranteed space, met in arrivals |
| Four meetings, about 8 km apart, back to the hotel | Five app bookings at AED 9–13 + 8 × 2.45: about AED 145–165, plus Salik and the wait for each car | Business sedan, 4–5 hours: about AED 360–600 | Taxi on price; chauffeur on time and reliability |
| Dinner 15 km away, car waits 2.5 hours | Two peak app taxis: about AED 100 in total, plus Salik | Three hours’ hire: about AED 270–360 | Taxi, unless you want the car outside |
The pattern is clear. For one person, a short trip and no luggage, take a taxi. The more people, bags, stops and waiting a trip involves, the closer the two come, and the more a chauffeur is worth.
Airport pickups: rank vs meet and greet
At DXB, taxis wait at ranks outside arrivals. At busy times there’s a queue, and you still need a car that takes your luggage.
A pre-booked chauffeur works differently:
- We track the flight, so the pickup moves if you land early or late.
- The chauffeur waits in arrivals with a name board. No queue, no looking for a car.
- Waiting is free for 45–60 minutes after landing, enough for immigration and bags.
- The car is sized to your luggage, because you told us the number of cases when you booked.
- The price is fixed, with Salik and airport parking included.

Ride-hailing: where it fits
Apps are useful when you want a car in a few minutes and don’t mind which one comes. In Dubai you can book taxis through apps as well as private cars. For taxis, the app booking fares in the table above apply. For private-car categories, the app shows a price before you confirm, and that price moves with demand, so the same trip can cost more on a Friday night than on a Tuesday afternoon.
What apps don’t do well: wait for you, meet you inside arrivals, carry a family with luggage, or keep the same car for a day. That’s where a chauffeur booking takes over.
Comfort and car standard
| Taxi | Ride-hailing private car | Chauffeur | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car | Standard sedan or van | Depends on the category booked | Chosen class: business sedan, S-Class, SUV, V-Class, ultra-luxury |
| Driver | Metered taxi driver | App driver | Suited chauffeur, booked in advance |
| Waiting | Meter runs at 50 fils a minute | Rarely waits | Included on hourly and full-day hire |
| Price certainty | Meter | Upfront, varies with demand | Fixed when you book |
| Wi-Fi and water | No | Varies | Included |
When a taxi is the right call, and when it isn’t
Take a taxi for short solo trips, off-peak hops between neighbouring districts, and any journey where you’d rather save money than time.
Book a chauffeur for airport arrivals with luggage or children, groups of three or more, days with several stops, evenings where you want the car outside, business guests you’re responsible for, and trips to Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. For more on what the chauffeur side costs, see our limousine price guide. Tolls apply either way; our Salik guide shows what they add.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between a taxi and a limousine?
A taxi is hailed or taken from a rank and charges by the meter. A limousine is booked in advance, is a higher-class car and, with a chauffeur company, is priced per trip, hour or day. With us, chauffeur, fuel, Salik, parking and VAT are included in that price.
Which cab service is cheaper in Dubai?
For a short trip on your own, a street-hailed Dubai taxi: AED 5 to start, AED 2.45 per km, AED 12 minimum. App-booked taxis start at AED 9–13. For groups with luggage or trips with waiting, a single chauffeur-driven van can cost about the same as several taxis.
How much does a limo cost in Dubai?
On published Dubai rate cards (September 2026), a business sedan with chauffeur costs about AED 90–120 an hour, an S-Class airport transfer AED 400–500 and a stretch limousine AED 399–799 an hour. Dubai Taxi’s metered limousine starts at AED 25 plus AED 3.90 per km.
Is it cheaper to use an app or a taxi in Dubai?
For taxis, the app booking fare (AED 9–13 to start) is higher than a street hail (AED 5), but the per-km rate is the same. Private cars in ride-hailing apps are priced by demand, so they can be cheaper or dearer than a taxi depending on the time.
Do Dubai taxis charge for Salik?
Yes. Dubai Taxi adds Salik tolls to the metered fare, and trips crossing into Sharjah carry an extra AED 20. Chauffeur prices with us already include Salik.
