World Triathlon Abu Dhabi 2026 runs 13–22 November on Hudayriyat Island: the WTCS elite sprints and mixed relay on 13–14 November, then the Multisport World Championships through to the long-distance races on 22 November. Most race mornings start between 6:30 and 9:00am, so from Dubai you’re leaving at about 4:30am. Book the car the night before, not the morning of.

This is a one-off for the UAE. It’s the first time the Multisport Championships have come to the Middle East, and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council expects more than 3,000 triathletes, most of them flying in. We run the Dubai to Abu Dhabi chauffeur transfer every day, and race week on Hudayriyat changes the usual plan in two ways: very early starts, and bikes that need to travel with you.

When is the World Triathlon Championship in Abu Dhabi?

The 2026 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Abu Dhabi run from 13 to 22 November 2026 on Hudayriyat Island, with the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) Abu Dhabi opening the week on 13–14 November. WTCS Abu Dhabi was moved from its usual March slot to sit alongside the championships this year.

Here’s the published race programme. World Triathlon says schedules can change, and the full timetable lives in the event app.

There’s no 2027 or 2028 edition in Abu Dhabi. The Multisport Championships move every year, and Edmonton has the 2027 event. WTCS Abu Dhabi is a regular stop on the series, so it should be back, but World Triathlon hasn’t published its 2027 date yet. Everything else on the UAE calendar is in our Dubai events calendar.

Who’s racing and who’s watching?

Two crowds. The elite and para fields race for world titles and WTCS points, with their federations handling logistics. The much bigger group is age-groupers: amateurs racing for their countries, travelling with partners, kids and a bike box. The Abu Dhabi Sports Council’s announcement said more than 80% of attendees would come from abroad.

That second group is who this guide is for. Plenty of them will fly into DXB and base the family in Dubai, then find the race site is on the far side of Abu Dhabi city.

How do you get from Dubai to Hudayriyat Island?

By car. There’s no direct public transport from Dubai to the island, and on race mornings you’ll be travelling before the first intercity buses make sense. Hudayriyat sits off the southwest corner of Abu Dhabi island, reached by the Hudayriyat Bridge near Al Bateen. Visit Abu Dhabi puts it at 15–20 minutes from most of the city.

From Dubai, you drive the full length of the E11, cross onto Abu Dhabi island, then cross it to reach the bridge. These are the times we plan around:

FromTo Hudayriyat Island, early morningDaytime or evening
Dubai Marina / JLTabout 1 h 30 min1 h 40 min – 2 h
Downtown / Business Bayabout 1 h 45 min1 h 50 min – 2 h 15 min
DXB airport / Deiraabout 1 h 55 min2 h – 2 h 20 min
Abu Dhabi Corniche hotels15–20 min20–30 min
Yas Island / Saadiyat hotels30–40 min30–45 min

The Dubai rows build on our measured route times in the Dubai to Abu Dhabi distance and travel time guide, plus the run across the island. For a 6:30am start with transition opening earlier, a Dubai Marina athlete leaves at about 4:15am. That’s why we tell Dubai-based racers to move to an Abu Dhabi hotel for their race days if they can.

Tolls are part of our price, but they explain the timing. The Darb gates on the bridges onto Abu Dhabi island charge at 7–9am and 3–7pm, Monday to Saturday, and are free on Sundays. Race-morning runs go through well before 7am.

Other ways onto the island

  • Taxi inside Abu Dhabi. Fine from a city hotel. Getting one back off the island at a quiet hour can take a while, so arrange the return before you race.
  • Bus 73. Visit Abu Dhabi lists public bus 73 between Al Reem Island and Hudayriyat, with space for bicycles. Useful for a training day; too slow to bet a race start on.

Bikes, bike boxes and which car to book

A boxed road or tri bike doesn’t fit in a sedan boot with luggage. Book for the box, not for the number of people.

Your groupCar we’d sendWhy

Athlete plus partner and kidsMercedes V-Class or Hyundai StariaUp to four people plus the box and bags
Club or national team, 4–8 athletesVan with driver plus a second car for peopleBoxes in one vehicle, athletes rested in the other
Federation or team of 12+Minibus or coach through our bus rental in Abu DhabiOne pickup for the whole team, daily loop to the venue

Once you’re on the island, the bike can stay. World Triathlon is running a free, secure bike park inside the Velodrome in the Championship Village for the whole of race week, so you only move the box on arrival and departure days. That’s the airport-to-hotel leg we see go wrong most often: the athlete books a sedan from DXB, the box won’t go in, and the first hour of the trip is spent waiting for a bigger car.

Flying into Abu Dhabi instead of Dubai? Zayed International Airport (AUH) is much closer to the island, and our chauffeur service in Abu Dhabi covers pickups there.

Drop-off, parking and where your driver waits

The Championship Village is at the Velodrome, the competition zone is at the 321 Sports Stadium, and the WTCS swim starts next to Bab Al Nojoum beach. As of mid-October, World Triathlon’s race-info pages don’t publish spectator parking or a drop-off plan, so check the event app in race week.

What we know about the island: Visit Abu Dhabi says there’s plenty of everyday parking near Marsana, Hudayriyat Beach and Circuit X. On race days, expect parts of the island’s roads to be on the course and some car parks to be taken by the event.

How we handle it:

  1. Drop as close to the Velodrome as the marshals allow, then the driver moves to whichever public car park is open.
  2. Agree a pickup point and a time window, not an exact time. Long-distance athletes can’t predict their finish to the minute, and phones go flat.
  3. Book hourly hire for family supporters. A 3-hour minimum covers a cross-triathlon morning; the long-distance day needs most of a day. The car stays with the family, and the athlete gets a lift home once racing ends.
  4. Book the departure leg like the arrival. The bike comes out of the Velodrome on your last day, so send the same size of car back for it.

Race week traffic around Abu Dhabi and Dubai

The triathlon isn’t the only big event that week:

  • Spartan World Championship, 19–22 November, in the Al Wathba desert outside Abu Dhabi. Different site, but it brings its own crowd of athletes into Abu Dhabi for the same weekend.
  • DP World Tour Championship, 12–15 November, at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. It loads the southern Dubai routes towards the E11 on the opening weekend.
  • Big 5 Global opens at Dubai World Trade Centre on Monday 23 November, the day after the long-distance race. If you’re flying home from DXB that morning, allow extra time on Sheikh Zayed Road.
  • Friday 13 November evening. The Opening Ceremony starts at 18:00, so supporters heading back to Dubai that night land in the evening traffic on the E11.

Leaving after the Closing Ceremony at 21:30 on Sunday 22 November is a different problem: everyone heads for the Hudayriyat Bridge at once. We’d rather have the driver wait an extra half hour than sit your family in that queue.

If you’re also in Abu Dhabi for the Grand Prix two weeks later, our guide to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from Dubai covers Yas Island.

Frequently asked questions

What is the schedule for the 2026 Abu Dhabi triathlon?

WTCS Abu Dhabi elite sprints are on Friday 13 November (women 14:00, men 16:00) and the mixed relay on Saturday 14 November at 16:15. The Multisport Championships follow: duathlon 14–15 November, cross triathlon 17 November, cross duathlon 19 November, aquathlon 20 November and long distance on 22 November, with most starts between 6:30 and 9:00am.

Is there a triathlon event in Abu Dhabi in 2026?

Yes. Hudayriyat Island hosts the 2026 World Triathlon Multisport Championships from 13 to 22 November, with WTCS Abu Dhabi on 13–14 November. It’s the first time the Multisport Championships have been held in the Middle East, and more than 3,000 athletes are expected.

How long does it take to get from Dubai to Hudayriyat Island?

Plan on about 1 hour 30 minutes from Dubai Marina and about 1 hour 45 minutes from Downtown on an early-morning run, longer in daytime traffic. The island is 15–20 minutes from central Abu Dhabi over the Hudayriyat Bridge near Al Bateen. For dawn race starts, stay in Abu Dhabi if you can.

Where do athletes leave their bikes at World Triathlon Abu Dhabi?

In the free, secure bike park inside the Velodrome in the Championship Village, available throughout race week. Bring the bike in a box or bag on arrival day, rack it, and you won’t need to move it between races. Book an SUV or van for that arrival leg.
